Hurricane Ian’s National Impact
While last month’s MMG email shared a positive note about U.S. manufacturers and distributors going local to fill the nation’s supply chain, it’s hard to maintain that enthusiasm in light of the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian.
Sadly, the difficult job of rebuilding communities is expected to be made even worse by snarled supply chains. Bloomberg News reported that the Associated Builders and Contractors is seeing challenges in obtaining building materials due to a shortage of rail cars and trucks.
Moreover, material costs remain unpredictable in the wake of the storm. One irony is that while supplies from lumber mills have improved this year, the storm has slowed deliveries to affected areas, creating a glut of lumber and sending prices lower elsewhere.
To be sure, lumber prices have been volatile since the pandemic began, and while there is an oversupply in North America, disruptions from Ian may cause logistical issues transporting materials including lumber, drywall, tile and shingles.
In addition, some insurance adjusters have expressed fears about the labor pool’s ability to keep pace with demand.
How Hurricane Ian impacts the business community in Southern California remains to be seen, but mailers whose list includes Florida addresses should definitely be conferring with their Southeastern divisions and partners.
