As the number of container ships lined up for unloading in Long Beach hits a record low, indications are that U.S. manufacturers and distributors are going local rather than continuing our dependence on China to fill the nation’s supply chain.
In fact, the US merchandise-trade deficit narrowed in July to the smallest since October as imports fell for a fourth month, suggesting good prospects for economic growth in the third quarter.
Need more positive proof? According to Dodge Construction Network, as quoted in Bloomberg News, the construction of new manufacturing facilities in the U.S. has soared 116% over the past year!
And it’s not just the big guys. Scores of smaller companies are making similar moves, said the chief economist at Dodge, and they all point to the same thing: a major re-assessment of supply chains in the wake of port bottlenecks, parts shortages, and skyrocketing shipping costs.
Even the higher wages of American workers and the current high valuation of the U.S. Dollar versus other currencies do not overshadow the savings companies realize by reducing shipping costs and time-to-market.
All-in-all, good signs for a resurgence and leveling out of our local supply chain.

Women in Leadership
Women In Leadership Luncheon
On Friday, October 21, the San Diego Regional East County Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 20th Annual Women in Leadership Luncheon (WILL) at Sycuan Casino Resort.
The event was first launched in 2003 to honor women who excel both professionally and as community leaders and the roster of awardees over the past nineteen years is a genuine San Diego honor roll. The successful women of San Diego County, along with inspirational keynote speakers, keep WILL growing year after year.
The Keynote Speaker at this milestone year’s luncheon will be Erica Pinto, Chairwoman of the Jamul Indian Village of California, and the Emcee will be Lauren Phinney, News Anchor at KUSI Television.
If you would like to be part of the action, you can showcase your business (or yourself!) with a sponsorship or donation for the opportunity drawing. We did!
In fact, over the years since this important event was first created, we’ve donated thousands of dollars and countless person-hours to assure its success.
ALL nominees will be recognized publicly at the luncheon. Be there!
